Why Time Management?

“Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.”

-Samuel Johnson

Let me start at the beginning.  Part of my early career was as a business consultant. When you hang out your shingle, you get people from all walks of life with a wide range of problems and issues to resolve.  People would come in and say they were unhappy with the profitability of their business and wanted ways to fix the problem. They would want a new way to organize their warehouse.  Help in rolling out a new product.  Suggestions on whether they should buy a specific business.  I was asked about a wide range of topics.

I noticed very early on that there was a constant issue for all of my clients; how they managed their time and the value they were getting for the time they were investing.  They were all hard workers but the results they were getting were not indicative of the amount of time they were chewing up. Plenty of activity but poor results

It was a universal problem. I started to make notes on every client. With out fail, I would make simple changes to their routines and the results were astounding.  It didn’t matter who came or what their initial reason for coming in was, simple changes to their routines brought them large benefits in terms of productivity and what they [...]

Are You A Bug Or A Windshield?

“He who chooses the beginning of a road chooses the place it leads to.  It is the means that determine the end.”

-Harry Emerson Fosdick

What does this have to do with Time Management?  A lot.

Before you can be effective and really make some positive changes in how you deal with and treat time, you have to be able to see the playing field. You have to not only see the playing field but also know the players, the rules and how the game works.

In this case the game is Time Management, the players are you and everyone and everything that interacts with you and finally, there are no rules, at least not written down ones. It’s a jungle out there and every one of us has to find out where they are in the pecking order.

This brings us to the question, are you a bug or are you the windshield?

Windshields splatter bugs; it’s a simple concept.

Windshields are hard and bugs are soft; no contest, the windshields win every time. It’s an important point to bear in mind.  Windshields do not look for bugs to splatter; windshields go on their merry way, minding their own business and if a bug happens to be in its path, splatter.  Something else to bear in mind; the only time a windshield splatters a bug is when its moving, unless of course a bug wants to commit suicide and [...]

We Can’t Make Them Longer, So Let’s Make Them Better

I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better.

-Henry David Thoreau

The above quote is one of the reasons why I personally like to use quotes as a way of motivating myself.  In one sentence Thoreau sums up about 20 years of my life trying to figure out how to squeeze more into my days when I should have been focused on accomplishing more of the important things than just worrying about production and volume.

To be fair to myself, I was close.  I have always advocated that what was irrefutable to achieving ones happiness was the skill, ability and the discipline required to achieve one’s personal key priorities on a regular basis. I had the intent, what I did not have was Thoreau’s ability to succinctly wrap it up in a single, beautiful sentence.

So, we all are in agreement that it makes zero sense to try to cram everything into one single day and we are also all in agreement that we can not make more time?  So we are left to follow Thoreau’s advice and concentrate on making every day as productive as possible.

What does POP has to say about making each day better?

  • Somewhere, some time, even for a few moments, there has to be something that you do each day that lifts your spirit, that makes you smile, that gives you a small moment of respite.
  • Put something into your PLLL, or take [...]

What We Decide To Invest Our Energy and Time on Should be the Things That Give Us That Zing For Life

Its not how many things we can do in life, it’s about the number of things we can accomplish that really make the difference to us on a very personal level.

It’s about the quality, not the quantity.

POP is going to allow, help you accomplish more of the things that matter to you most. That sounds a bit pompous but it’s absolutely true. Here are some of the key components to POP and how they are going to benefit you the most:

1.  The number one reason that all of us accomplish less of the goals and activities that we would like to achieve is that we start and stop too many lesser goals, and this massive waste of time, energy and resources sabotages our efforts to get to the really important stuff.

The failure to have a systematic approach to establishing / setting / prioritizing potential goals and tasks means we are leaving this critically important task to a hodge-podge of chance, luck and flapping in the breeze.

How has this worked for you so far?

Join the club. It’s a process that we never “get right“.  I have been at this for more than 30 years.  The days when I am on my game are the days that go well.  The days that I am off my game, those days go less well.  That is why it’s a journey, not a destination.

POP spends a great deal of its time and energy working on getting this process in place and working for you.  You [...]

Maybe a Tune Up? Maybe an Engine Overhaul? and Everything in Between

Empowering and enriching someone’s life can sound a bit presumptuous.

Sounds like I take myself way too seriously, which is not the case.

For a certainty, I can say, guarantee that POP will make a positive improvement to your life, period. What remains to be seen is how empowering and how big of an improvement that will be.

You can expect to see some of these improvements;

1.      Nothing is more stressful than experiencing unnecessary failures. We fail more times than we should when we load up our plates with an insurmountable volume of tasks, and then beat ourselves up when we fail.

One of Pop’s areas of expertise is to work with you on gathering, storing, sorting, prioritizing your life’s tasks and goals, and then giving you the absolute maximum opportunity to achieve the most important goals you have in life.

Working with POP, you are going to accomplish more of the goals you have set for yourself and accomplish these goals with less stress, less anxiety and with less wear and tear on yourself.

2.      POP can not give your more time, but POP will make you a better trader and by doing so, you will better use the time and energy you have available. Most people do not have an organized system of deciding how to invest their time and energy, the result is that we end up making poor choices when it comes to investing and utilizing our two most crucial resources, our time and energy.

POP focuses on  working with you to develop [...]
